This time, Cynthia Marks followed him outside to see what happens when healthcare goes to the patient instead. The medicine was only part of it. Brett calls the approach radical humility: the person in front of you still gets to decide what happens to their body, even when the medical answer seems obvious. Sometimes the team recommends the hospital. Sometimes the answer is no. And instead of walking away, the question becomes: What can we do here? A wound may be treated beside a truck. But perhaps the most important thing we saw was even simpler: They come back. People knew the team. The team remembered them. They noticed what had changed since the last visit. That changes healthcare from an encounter into a relationship. And the longer we stayed, the harder it became to see anyone as a category. Not “the unhoused.” A person. A history. A set of choices, losses, relationships and circumstances that cannot be understood from across the street. We had heard Brett describe Street Medicine in the studio.
